Molière. 2006 by Laurent Tirard. DVD, 120 min.

If your curriculum covers any Molière piece (especially Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Le Tartuffe, Les Femmes Savantes, or Le Mariage Forcé) you definitely want to invest in a copy of Molière. This clever comédie dramatique proposes the source of Molière’s inspiration for turning his attention tragédies to fabulous comédies.

A French production, Molière is subtitled in English for North American audiences. Acting, locations, and costumes are wonderful to make Molière and le Grand Siècle come alive for 21st century high school students. They will easily recognize the characters from the comedies studied in class. More advanced students will appreciate the scenes in the salon de précieuses and the court in general.

Molière is rated PG in this reviewer’s opinion (no rating visible on the jacket). There are implied sexual situations, but no nudity or embarrassing scenes, yet students are well-aware of shenanigans on and off stage. Appropriate for grades 11 and up.
